Sprinting Prowess and Prostate Cancer: Are they related?

Jamaica’s athletic sprinting prowess has become legendary. But what accounts for Jamaica’s outstanding track record in sprinting and how does a small country such as Jamaica with limited resources produce such awe-inspiring athletic performances? Apart from its legendary sprinting prowess Jamaica is also characterised by having a high prostate cancer incidence and mortality rate. Other Caribbean countries have also reported increases in prostate cancer. Sprinting talent is not unique to only Jamaica but is distributed throughout the Caribbean. Could these two be related or have common underlying casual factors. Prostate cancer is the most prevalent male cancer on most Caribbean islands and is also the most common death-related male cancer. Strong athletic sprinting tradition, excellent coaches and outstanding sports administration are possible reasons for the skewed distribution of sprinting prowess.
