The Croton in Jamaican Spirituality

The croton (codiaeum) is a native plant of Malaysia and the islands of the Indio-Pacific region. By the 19th century potted croton plants could be observed on the steps of mansions and gardens of well-to-do families in Jamaica. The croton was linked intimately to the most important rituals associated with the birth of freedom in the African diaspora-funeral rituals. The croton is a sacred plant to Revivalist as well as some other Jamaicans. Many ‘New World’ plans have become icons to Africans for physical, psychological, spiritual healing. The croton might have achieved its special status because its striking multi-colored presence exudes an aura of nations of gods.
