Indigenous to mild and tropical counties such as Australia, South Africa and the northern hemisphere, the water lily has been in existence for hundreds of years.
Popular in mild water of the United States and Canada, the water lily can also be referred to as American white water-lily, fragrant water-lily, sweet-scented water-lily and beaver root. Scientifically, the plant is called Nymphaea odorata, which is the fragrance of the flower. These plants multiply in still waters that are six feet deep. (What Is the Habitat of Water Lilies? 2010)
The name ‘water lily’ refers to three (3) distinct groups: Nymphaeaceae, Cambobaceae, and Hydatellaceae. Tropical water lilies blossom in hot and wet climate and hardy water lilies are able to flourish in freezing climate. These flowers can flourish during the day or at night.
